Help us bring to the world PHILADELPHIA IN COLOR

What was Philadelphia like in the 1950s? What did it look and feel like? What has been erased and what has been forgotten? What happened to the city of two million during the 1960s and 70s, those decades of upheaval and transformation? What forces converged in the 80s?

About a year ago, as we started to collect the photographs that would help us answer these questions, we realized we were on to something. We were creating a portrait of the city that had never existed before. In a word it was astonishing. Here was the chance to show the unseen Philly to ourselves and to the world.

We couldn’t leave it anyone else, so we decided we would design and publish the book ourselves. Our subject demanded this level of commitment.

This means we’re writing, curating, designing, and printing PHILADELPHIA IN COLOR ourselves--and taking on the work of distribution. We’re aiming for art-world quality and an unpretentious, accessible product that everyone will love.

That’s where you come in.

Assembling over 1,000 photographs from dozens of sources, scanning and processing them, and turning it all into a groundbreaking public history initiative costs money.

By contributing now to the effort, pre-purchasing copies, and spreading the word, you’re giving us a chance to blow the collective mind of Philadelphia.

Wouldn’t you like to do that?
